Digital Detox: A Fresh Take on Mental and Emotional Well-being

If you’ve been following Inspirations & Celebrations for a while, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been a little quiet over here lately. Well, that’s because I needed to do a digital detox. As a lifestyle blogger since 2011, I’ve essentially been creating online content consistently for the past decade. But I’ve learned that one of the keys to being a highly creative person is to vacillate between doing and being. Not to mention – our minds often need to experience diversity and newness in order to be even more creative. That said – I’ve found that in order to be our most passionate, enthusiastic, and creatively inspired selves, we have to routinely take “time off” from our digital world to just enjoy our analog lives. So, that’s exactly what I’ve been up to for the past few weeks – taking a break from the virtual realm.

From delving into interesting topics like quantum physics, neuroplasticity (and how our minds work), and spirituality, to getting outside in nature, exploring new places, nurturing my relationships with loved ones, and focusing on my other businesses, my “digital detox” has led to me enjoying a variety of IRL experiences that are making me feel more inspired, excited, and rejuvenated.

Some people might think that a digital detox is an anti-social activity, but there are actually so many positive aspects about disconnecting for just a little while. To be honest – going offline for a bit can actually help you strengthen your real-life relationships, as it encourages you to be more present and less distracted.

Here are 3 mental health and wellness benefits of a digital detox.

  1. Stress reduction: With more time offline, you’ll feel less pressured to post to social media or engage with other people’s content. This will give your brain a break and allow it the necessary downtime that is required for feeling refreshed. Not only can it reduce stress, but it can also boost focus and productivity (for other in-real-life tasks you want to accomplish).
  2. Self-care: You might be surprised at how much mental well-being a digital detox can provide! Taking some time off gives you more time and energy to take care of your physical and emotional wellness. From working out and meditating to spending time in nature and reconnecting with your inner world, a digital detox is a great way to enhance your self-care routine.
  3. Mental health: A digital detox also provides an opportunity to disconnect from the world and release any residual anxiety that may be weighing on you. Disconnecting can help you maintain a healthy mental state by freeing up your headspace for creativity, problem-solving, self-compassion, and more!

Whether you go off-line for a day or even a few weeks, a digital detox can be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy your real life and experience new things. For example, you might catch up with people you haven’t talked to in a while, join a club and make new friends, or even take up a fun hobby or passion project that stimulates your mind. There are so many great ways you can stay active and enhance your sense of well-being without feeling addicted to the digital world.

So, if you’re in need of a virtual break – take it. Remember, you are in control of your thoughts, feelings, and energy. That’s why it’s vitally important that you monitor your mental, emotional, and physical state so that you can make wise decisions that will positively impact your life. Whenever you need to hit the “reset” button, a digital detox can come in handy. Take a few hours, or even days, away from social media and technology – it can truly make a difference in how you think and feel.
