Whether you’re doing Zoom calls for work, scheduling FaceTime dates, or doing virtual Happy Hours with your friends, you’ll want to keep your hair looking camera-ready. Here’s how to easily get salon-looking hair at home.

Quarantine Beauty Secrets - How To Get Gorgeous Hair at Home

While you might not be able to do a haircut on yourself (unless you’re experienced with scissors) or a full-on highlight & lowlight color application (which gets tricky), there are a few simple secrets to ensuring your hair looks good during this time period. If you have some pesky gray hairs or your color is looking less than vibrant, here are some products that can help in a pinch.

Root Touchup

If you have a few gray hairs popping up, a quick and easy solution is to apply a root touchup product. This temporary, wash-out product helps to make gray roots virtually disappear in a pinch. It’s easy to apply, great for in-between color appointments and washes out in the shower. There are various types of root touchup products on the market, including spray formulas and powder versions. Having tried several, I recommend using a powder version (as it’s easier to use and less messy). A few products I recommend are COLOR WOW Root Cover Up, Style Edit Root Touch Up and Clairol Root Touch-Up Concealing Powder.

PRO TIP: Don’t touch your hair (with hands or clothing) after applying it, as it can transfer to skin or fabric.

Semi-Permanent Hair Color

If you usually color your roots (due to gray hairs), then a good option during this Quarantine period is to use semi-permanent hair color to cover gray roots. This is gentler on the hair than permanent hair color and gradually fades out after about 10 shampoos. Instead of coloring your entire hair, I recommend applying the product just to the roots (to cover-up pesky grays).

An easy-to-use semi-permanent hair color I discovered is Clairol Root Touch-Up Color Blending Gel as it comes in a tube with a pre-made formula (so there is no mixing required), and it has an applicator brush affixed to it, so it’s very easy to apply to roots. Plus, you can put the cap back on the tube so that you can use the product at a later date. I recommend leaving the formula on for the full 15-minutes (if you have stubborn grays).

Hair Glaze

To boost the shine, vibrancy, and manageability of your hair, a few times a week, I recommend using a clear hair glaze (like the John Frieda Luminous Glaze Clear Shine Gloss). This easy-to-use gloss coats the hair follicles, adding mega-watt sheen and softness. It also helps to make hair color look more rich and vibrant. You simply apply it to wet hair from roots to tips (after shampooing, while still in the shower), leave on for a few minutes and then rinse out with cool water. It won’t change your hair color and it doesn’t damage the hair. You will instantly notice that your hair looks shinier, smoother, and less prone to frizz or dryness.
