What is feng shui?

Feng shui is an ancient art that originated in China. It is based on the principle of balance, harmony, and “chi” (or energy) flow. The practice can be used to improve your space and bring positive energy (including happiness, creativity, and abundance) into your home or office. Practitioners believe that chi energy flows through every living thing. Based on this concept, these practices can help you create a more positive, naturally harmonious flow within your home and office environments.

As explained on The Spruce, “The philosophy of feng shui is a practice of arranging the pieces in living spaces in order to create balance with the natural world. The goal is to harness energy forces and establish harmony between an individual and their environment. In Asian culture, this philosophy is called the Tao, which translates to mean “the way.” Taoism is the way of nature and all the basic principles of feng shui reflect nature. Take a look at the essential principles of feng shui: the commanding position, the Bagua, and the five elements (wood, fire, earth, water, and metal).”

How can it enhance the energy of a space?

Have you ever walked into a room that just felt stagnant or lifeless? From overdecorated or cluttered spaces (that can zap your energy or make you feel overwhelmed) to poorly designed layouts with bad furniture placements, when rooms are not designed with feng shui principles in mind, it can result in poor “chi” circulation within the space.

As explained in an Architectural Digest article, “The goal of feng shui is to invite positive chi into your home so that your life feels both energized and balanced, and it’s a relatively simple way to improve the vibes of your space.”

Creating a home or office that inspires, invigorates, or relaxes you, requires a mindful approach. Fortunately, with the right know-how, you can create a space that enhances the energy in each room, rather than stifling or stagnating it.

How to use feng shui in your home:

  • Add plants and flowers to your home space. Bringing nature into your home or office instantly adds life and energy. Most plants help to oxygenate interior spaces and enhance the good chi (energy circulation) in a room. However, the only types of plants to avoid are succulents, as they’re believed to have “stagnant energy” (as they don’t require much water).
  • Be mindful of color choices. Choose colors that evoke emotions you want to feel in the room, such as green for peacefulness or blue for tranquility. In feng shui, there are certain principles about which colors to use for different rooms (and in different geographical locations of the home – for example, a southeast corner vs. a northwest corner). So, figure out the layout of your home first, then apply feng shui principles to make the most of your existing design.
  • Be strategic about mirror placements. The practice of using mirrors is seen as helpful for deflecting negative energy or amplifying the positive energy of a space. But there are some caveats – never put a mirror across from your bed (as it’s said to stimulate too much energy in the room, which isn’t helpful for sleeping conditions). It’s also important to place mirrors in locations that reflect a beautiful scene. For example, a mirror facing artwork or plants is great; whereas a mirror facing a television, is not ideal.

These are just a few basic feng shui principles you can think about as you decorate or organize your home.

Another key aspect of feng shui to remember is that clutter leads to stagnant chi. Like Marie Kondo (author of the best-selling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up) says, “Life truly begins after you put your house in order”. She’s a big believer in the philosophy that getting organized at home can help you reap major rewards, including creativity, clarity, focus, and enhanced energy.

That’s why organizing your home, de-cluttering, and tidying up make a big difference in how you think and feel.
