To say that my dad is my hero is an understatement. Anyone that has ever met my dad would know this to be true. When our mom got sick with breast cancer and battled it along with chemo and radiation, my dad stood by her side. She never complained, even when she was hurting the most, and my dad had to play the role of both father and mother. She lost her battle with cancer a week before my 21st birthday. That’s when my dad took Motherhood 101. He had to learn how to do laundry, cook, clean, and all these other seemingly mindless tasks that my mom did, all while raising 4 kids and teaching full time. My dad traveled almost 40 weeks a year for his job. But when mom got sick, he traveled less and less. He helped me and my brother finish school and move on with our lives. Then, a year ago, our world changed forever. My father, who was in better shape than men half his age, never smoked, never drank, and never even saw drugs got some very shocking news. He was diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, terminal cancer. He had JUST retired the week before he found out. My brother and sisters, who all lived out of town, all came in, and we did the drill. Surgery, chemo, and some clinical trials were what my father was now facing. Here he was, almost 70 years old, freshly retired and ready to live out the rest of his days in peace gets the worst diagnosis in the world! And yet, he still has his faith. He struggles with the pain and all the side effects of the medications like a trooper. I do not think I could be so brave. He just got back from traveling through Europe, and it all seems too familiar. Right before my mom died, my dad took her on a trip to Bermuda. Now, my dad was doing the same thing, just in a different location. They say he has months to live, but as my dad says, “Doctors don’t know everything. If they did, I wouldn’t have cancer.” I do not want to be orphaned by cancer. It is a thief that steals your loved ones and all the time you would have had with them. I talk to my dad every day. We formed a bond years ago, after my mom died. I’ve been there for him, and he’s been there for me for almost everything. I cannot be there with him for the finish, but I know this. My dad is the best man I know. If I can remember half the lessons he taught me, I’ll be okay. So this Father’s Day is a really big deal for my family. It most likely is the last Father’s Day that we will have with my dad. His birthday is right after it, so we are celebrating both. I just hope he knows that I love him more than anything in this world. I am so proud to call him my dad. And I’m not ready to let him go. Not yet!
