Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Throughout the month of October, people everywhere will be “thinking pink” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From attending charitable events and raising funds toward Breast Cancer research to shopping for products that donate proceeds to these worthy causes, here are 3 ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

3 Ways To Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The National Breast Cancer Foundation says, “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.”

The National Cancer Institute states that “when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98%.” Whether you know a friend, family member, or a loved one who has battled (or is currently dealing with) Breast Cancer, or you personally have experienced this life-threatening disease, this month acts as a reminder that we need to be proactive in taking care of our health by creating an early detection plan.

To support this worthy cause, here are three ways to think pink this month.

1. Donate: The NBCF is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides breast health services to women in need. The easiest way to get involved and show your support is to donate. Just a $100 donation helps provide a mammogram to a woman who needs it. In 2012, 86% of NBCF’s spending went to these programs, including providing mammograms, breast health services, education, and support for those in need. The organization “accomplishes this through partnerships with hospitals and breast health facilities across the country, community outreaches, and digital educational and support resources”.

2. Fundraise: From creating a personal fundraising page or hosting a fundraiser to simply participating in a local NBCF event (such as a fundraiser dive or 5k marathon), there are a variety of fun ways to help support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, while raising money for this worthwhile cause. You can even host a benefit concert, art show, or other type of event to help raise funds toward Breast Cancer research and services.

3. Shop “Pink”: From Forever 21 to Nordstrom, a number of major retailers and brands are doing their part to help support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by donating a portion of the profits earned on the sale of special “pink” products. You can shop “pink” this month, buying everything from skincare products (like Clarisonic) and beauty products to jewelryaccessories, and home goods.
