7 Summer Skincare Secrets

Skincare is an important daily regimen you should do everyday, regardless of the season. As we transition from Spring into Summer, there are some changes that we need to make in our skincare program, to help our skin better adapt to the climate and environmental differences that Summer brings. From longer days outdoors (exposing our sensitive skin to the harmful rays of the Sun), to increased dryness in the climate, there are a number of reasons we need to vary up the types of skincare products we use to help our skin adjust to the weather and climate. Amanda Elias, beauty expert and founder of Bravura London shares her 7 top Summer skincare secrets.

Summer Skincare Secret # 1

Since the Sun is a primary cause of premature aging, (resulting in dull, dry, wrinkled skin with hyper-pigmentation), you need to protect all exposed skin with a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen (use at least SPF 30). This type of sun protection helps defend against both UVA & UVB rays. Look for a skincare product that’s waterproof. Don’t forget to protect your lips, ears, and the back of your neck as well. And make sure to re-apply frequently.

You might regularly focus on cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing your face, but do you spend as much TLC on your body? Make sure to exfoliate your body at least twice a week (using a body scrub) and if possible, slather yourself daily (after your shower) in your favorite body lotion.

Do you often notice that your skin flushes when you get hot? Keep a refreshing water spray or toner spray at hand to spritz your face and neck when you feel yourself overheating.

During the humid summer months, avoid wearing perfumes on your skin. When the sun hits the areas of skin that contain perfumes, it can cause irritation. Instead, add fragrance to your hair by lightly spraying your hairbrush with your favorite scent, then brushing through your locks.

Sun and lip gloss aren’t a good combination, as they increase your chances for getting burnt, chapped lips. To prevent this from happening, apply a lip balm that contains SPF. To add color to your lips, you can use a tinted lip balm or line your lips with a lip pencil (then top with a clear SPF balm).

Do you often get parched skin after drinking too much alcohol and spending excessive time in the sun? Intensely nourish your skin with an essential oil such as jojoba oil. This non-comedogenic (which means it won’t clog your pores) oil helps keep your skin moisturized without making it greasy. If you already got a sunburn, help the healing process by applying pure aloe vera gel 3-4 times a day.
