Inspired by the glamorous era of the mid-20th century, the Badgley Mischka Spring 2020 runway show at NYFW (at Spring Studios) evoked a sense of nostalgia while modernizing the look of contemporary elegance.
Having celebrated their 30th Anniversary last year, the illustrious design duo of Mark Badgley and James Mischka, have been long-time favorites of stylish celebrities and fashion industry elite. From award-winning actresses (like Kate Winslet and Julia Roberts) to mega-entertainers (such as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Taylor Swift), Badgley Mischka has been worn by prominent figures around the globe for decades.

To top their previous seasons’ collections, the designers went above and beyond for their Spring 2020 collection.
To open the star-studded show, supermodel Maria Borges (pictured above) walked down the catwalk in a floral printed power suit that exuded a fresh and modern vibe, setting the stage for a brilliant show that transported us to another time and place.
The design-duo was quoted in a press statement by saying, “We started Spring 2020 by thinking about Claudette Colbert, when she left Hollywood behind and brought a relaxed glamour to the Caribbean, specifically to Barbados,” said Mark Badgley.
“From there we expanded to include all of the fabulous expats that brought elegance in the way they dressed and entertained, from Ian Fleming in Jamaica to the Jaggers in Mustique,” added James Mischka.
Infusing a mix of bold tropical prints, vibrant colors, and shimmering beading and sequins, the exquisite collection created a mesmerizing display of show-stopping pieces, ranging from stunning swimwear and resort wear to spectacular evening dresses.
Mark Badgley told Vogue post-show, “The way they entertained at night and dressed by night was beautiful; we saw photos, and it was so inspirational. It brought an ease to the glamour that we wanted to capture in the clothes.”
The Caribbean-inspired color palette created the foundation upon which the custom-made Italian fabrics were designed. Cheery citrus hues (like tangerine and grapefruit), crisp shades of lilac and aqua, and gleaming silver metallics (that exuded a mystical water nymph vibe) were the most prominent colors used in the collection.
Other accents that added to the decidedly romantic mood of the collection included figure-flattering silhouettes, exaggerated shapes, effortless draping, and feminine ruffles. A mix of dramatic blazers and suits, daytime dresses and evening gowns, and even bathing suits paired with breezy coverups grazed the runway.
While there were nods to vintage looks, to illustrate a metamorphosis of style from yesteryear to today, each of the pieces was brought into the 21st century through contemporary high-end construction or modern embellishments. Unique details like three-dimensional sculpted flowers, as an example, added accents fitting for present-day.
Every intricately-crafted look presented at New York Fashion Week exhibited their signature glamourous style while bringing a sense of modern elegance and refined sophistication to the collection.
While Badgley Mischka is often renowned for creating beautiful evening wear, shoes, and accessories, their Spring 2020 Collection proved that they could excel in designing pieces that are suitable for every occasion.
