What is Galentine’s Day?

If you’ve never heard of Galentine’s Day, here’s a little back story on how it came to be.

It all started in an episode of NBC’s television show, “Parks and Recreation”. After nearly 5 million viewers saw the episode, this “nonofficial holiday” (which heralds “ladies celebrating ladies”), started gaining popularity amongst women in real life.

Galentine’s Day is held on February 13th and is now celebrated everywhere, especially on social media – just look up the hashtag #galentinesday as proof. Whether you’ve been BFFs since childhood or you love hanging with your work gal pals, hosting a Galentine’s Day party is a fun way to get together.

Galentine’s Day Party // Food & Beverages

To toast to friendship, sparkling wine and champagne are in order at a Galentine’s Day party. To complement these bubbly beverages (and to take off the load from you, the hostess), opting for simple, fuss-free light bites is a smart choice. A mix of sweet and salty foods (like popcorn and desserts) are great options. Plus, they require minimal preparation and can be set-up right before the party starts, making your life easier.

When hosting a party, I always make sure to have one “star” dessert. That usually means I’ll shop from Kara’s Cupcakes (as shown above) or Nothing Bundt Cakes – both of which offer stellar desserts that people love. Then I fill in the table with less-expensive, but still beautiful-looking desserts from the supermarket (like these chocolate-dipped strawberries and glazed cookies from Safeway).

Galentine’s Day Party // Entertainment

To keep your guests happily occupied, aside from a little girl chat (which is definitely a must at a Galentine’s Day party), turning on a fun chick flick is an easy way to entertain guests. Movies like “Sex & The City” or “Pitch Perfect” are two great movies, as women love these light-hearted, gal pal comedies.

Another easy way to entertain guests is with a raucous game, like What Do You Meme? or charades. Both provide hours of fun for you and your guests, making it a memorable experience for all.

Galentine’s Day // Party Decorations

To add a festive touch to your home, use inexpensive, yet elegant, party decorations (like balloons and flowers). To make your Galentine’s Day party look upscale and chic, stick with soft colors like rose gold, metallic gold, and clear for your party decorations. Plus, if you really want to get creative, you can even create a DIY Balloon Garland (using a mix of jumbo, mini, and regular-sized latex balloons). This will definitely wow your guests!
