Style Tips: What To Wear To Go Apple Picking

For a recent apple picking outing at Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville, California, I went for a casual look that felt totally appropriate for this fun outdoor activity. Given that the weather was still warm (with a cool breeze), I chose lightweight, comfortable layers with stretchy fabrics.

As I quickly learned, this was a smart choice. When we arrived at the apple farm, we got caught in the middle of a dust storm! So, I found that by wearing a sporty ponytail and a comfortable outfit (that was easy to wash after) was the right way to go. A word to the wise – while apple picking looks easy and effortless (on Instagram, of course), in real life – it’s not exactly the easiest activity. Expect to get a little dirty, wear a comfortable outfit, and bring a small step ladder (if you want to pick the best apples). After heading home with about 5 lbs. of apples, get inspired in the kitchen by whipping up this delicious Apple Curry Chicken recipe.

Since I wanted to wear something that was cute but still practical, I opted for a fitted v-neck sweater, my go-to skinny jeans, equestrian-inspired riding boots, and a faux-suede jacket. For accessories, I kept things simple with designer sunglasses, an embroidered floral belt, a pair of silver ball stud earrings, and a classic rectangular-faced watch.

During the Fall months, the weather in California often varies from warm sunny days to chilly evenings. That’s why layering clothes, opting for lightweight sweaters, and wearing knee-high boots (with thick warm socks) are a few of my favorite styling tricks. Read on for more style tips.

Style Tips: How To Shop for Skinny Jeans

When shopping for skinny jeans (that you plan to wear every day), look for durable stretchy fabrics that are designed to withstand a lot of wear.

Having worn everything from AG Jeans to 7 for all Mankind (which are both great), I’ve learned that Paige is currently one of my favorite designer jeans brands. Not only do they flatter a woman’s figure (thanks to the Spanx-like stretchy materials and ideal pocket placements), but they also retain their shape (unlike a lot of other jeans that bag out quickly).

It’s also important to try on different jeans to see where the placement of the back pockets lay. Since each woman’s backside is shaped differently, that’s another reason why the width and placement of the pockets makes a difference. When pockets are placed slightly wider (and are cut a little bigger), they make your hips visually look smaller. If you have narrow hips, then you can opt for jeans with smaller pockets that are placed closer together.

Style Tips: How To Shop for Boots

When shopping for boots that you intend to wear regularly, opt for 1-2″ heels (preferably a stacked heel), as it’s better for your posture and easier on your feet.

While suede boots are always stylish (and definitely a must-have for dress-up), they require more maintenance. That’s why leather boots are a smart alternative, especially for every day. If you plan to do an outdoor activity (like apple picking), then you definitely want to wear a pair of boots that are easy to clean and for walking on uneven ground.

Since black boots are a basic style essential in every gal’s wardrobe, here are my tips on finding a chic pair (that won’t make you look like Santa Claus or a Halloween witch). To start with, skip the pointed toe and go with a rounded toe instead. I also recommend shopping for a pair of equestrian style riding boots that feature a quilted stitching pattern (for a classy look). For the finishing touch, if you love glamorous details, gold hardware is the always the perfect accent.

Style Tips: How To Shop for Faux-Suede Jackets

While real suede jackets are totally sumptuous, the hefty dry cleaning bill that comes along with them is pretty pricey. That’s why faux-suede jackets are a great substitute, especially when the weather is still comfortable.

A flattering silhouette is the cascade or draped look. Since this style jacket is less structured (than a moto jacket style), it casually drapes your body, which can create the illusion of a smaller waistline. Plus, its relaxed vibe makes it a great option for everyday outfits.

Rich Fall colors to shop for (that easily coordinate with most outfits) are grey, rust, and chocolate brown.
