To get started, use an oil-control face primer (to prolong the longevity of your makeup, prevent makeup meltdowns, and minimize shine on your face) and apply an SPF-infused BB Cream (for a more natural look that doesn’t feel heavy, like traditional foundation can).

In addition to these basic steps, Caroline Topperman (Editor-in-Chief of StyleOnTheSide.com) recommends exfoliating your lips. She says, “It doesn’t matter which lip color you choose as long as your lips are ready for color. Roughly 3 times a week (or as needed) apply a hydrating lip balm for a few minutes and then use either a toothbrush or a gentle scrub to exfoliate your lips. Remember that your skin is delicate so please be gentle. On that note, just as you would apply a night cream, don’t forget about slathering your lips with extra hydration.”

STEP 1: When doing your makeup, it’s best to start by defining your eyebrows. Often overlooked, brows are one of the most important steps in any makeup routine as it will help to accentuate your eyes and balance your face. Plus, a good brow often makes your face look “finished” and actually results in you needing less makeup, since it naturally highlights your features.

Using light, feathery strokes apply an eyebrow pencil. Blend with a spoolie to soften the pencil and make it more natural-looking. You can also finish with a brow powder, which is great for filling in sparse areas.

STEP 2: Apply a peach or coral-colored blush to the apples of your cheeks.

STEP 3: One of the hottest Summer beauty trends right now is sparkly bronze eyeshadow. To keep your face from looking like a disco ball, use your finger to pat on the shadow directly onto lids. To prevent fall-out from landing underneath your eyes, place a tissue directly under your eyes. The key is to gently pat the color onto lids, creating a warm wash, rather than a highly-pigmented dramatic effect.

Maddie North, a celebrity makeup artist (whose clients include stars like Olivia Culpo, Lorde, and Eve) says, “A pop of glitter on the eye is a fun trend I’m seeing. You can apply it with a brush, but I usually just use my fingers and dab on a little at a time.”

STEP 4: Since you’ve already exfoliated your lips, now you’re ready to prep your pout. Use a hydrating oil to moisturize your lips.

STEP 5: Since a bold lip color is totally on-trend this season, start by lining and filling in your lips with a bright, colorful orange-hued lip liner. This will help your lipstick stay on longer and define your lip-line.

STEP 6: If you want a long-wearing lip color that’s easy to apply, opt for a semi-matte lip crayon in a bright coral color. After one application, gently blot with a tissue, and then re-apply. This helps your lipstick last longer.

STEP 7: Lush, long eyelashes will always be in style. Instead of applying false eyelashes, to keep your look more natural (but still equally gorgeous), opt for a fiber-based volumizing mascara. Apply two coats to your lashes, and use an eyelash comb (if needed) to separate the lashes in between coats. This will prevent clumps and flakes.

Ulla Gaudin, a celebrity makeup artist (who has worked with Eva Longoria and Kristen Stewart) recommends fanning out your lashes. She says, “The contrast between black mascara and the whites of eyes makes the eyes appear more awake. For lift sans clump, wiggle the wand up and out from the lash’s outer corner.”

A few more fabulous Summer beauty tips from the pros:

  • Maria Sanchez-Priester, Founder of Beauty Door Pro says, “One of the things that I send every client before a makeup appointment is tips on how to hydrate your lips because that is the only thing that you can’t fake, and that’s hydrate, healthy-looking lips.”
  • Alejandro Falcon, Artistic Director for Osmosis  Colour Mineral Cosmetics recommends, “Osmosis’ Pressed Base Mineral Foundation used as a primer can prevent lipsticks from bleeding. Apply a small amount gently to just slightly erase the lips and then apply your favorite lip color on. The minerals will help to maintain the pigments from fading away.”
  • Beth Shankle Anderson, Editor-in-Chief at The Style Bouquet says, “I recommend using a lip primer before applying any lipstick. It keeps the lips looking moisturized. Especially, use a lip primer before applying matte lipstick as this will keep the moisturized look in place. Matte lipstick is really on trend right now.”
  • Zach Dishinger, Founder & CEO of Formula Z Cosmetics says “Liquid lipstick is super versatile. It can be worn with a gloss to add shine, applied sparingly as a matte lip tint, or paired with lip balm for a softer look.”
