While there are many cities within Sonoma Valley (ranging from the upscale vibe of Healdsburg to the rustic charm of Santa Rosa), for my recent trip, I decided to opt for the city of Sonoma as my home away from home, as it’s a convenient locale for nearby wine tastings and notable restaurants and has a delightful historic town square that is enjoyable to explore by foot.
That said, there are several luxury hotels in Sonoma, but for this particular trip, I chose to book a stay at the renowned Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa.
Over the years, I’ve read about the property in publications such as Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure, ranking it as one of the top historic hotels in Northern California. Not to mention – it’s highly reputed for its legendary (and palatial) spa, which is one of the primary reasons I was compelled to visit.
Heralded for its dreamy garden setting, warm and inviting ambiance, and hospitable atmosphere, this luxury hotel is a gem that’s tucked away from the world.
Based within the heart of the picturesque landscapes of Sonoma Valley, as you stroll through the manicured gardens, the historic mission-style architecture sets the tone for a luxurious retreat that effortlessly combines classic design, refined sophistication, and a relaxed atmosphere.
During Fall and the holiday season, you’ll notice that the pristinely landscaped setting takes on a vibrant and majestic display of aubergine, crimson, ochre, and olive green hues, as the lush foliage undergoes its annual transformation. It’s truly a breathtaking sight to behold, and makes for an ideal moment to savor and enjoy.
What makes the property uniquely different than other luxury hotels across the country is that it features multiple natural hot springs and therapy pools within its massive 40,000-square-foot deluxe spa. Whether you go for a massage treatment or just enjoy the steam room, sauna, and whirlpools, you’ll truly feel pampered in this tranquil oasis.
With elegantly appointed rooms and suites, each designed to reflect the traditional style and comforting nature of the setting, this resort exudes understated luxury combined with the warmth of California hospitality. From whirlpool jet spas and roaring fireplaces within the suites to gorgeous garden views from the rooms, the property was designed with serenity in mind.

Naturally, no trip to Sonoma Valley is complete without a journey into the heart of its viticultural treasures and culinary rewards.
After researching a variety of wineries (recommended by Wine Enthusiast and Food & Wine magazines), I decided to schedule a wine tasting at the top-rated Chateau St. Jean Winery, as it’s renowned as one of the most iconic wineries in Sonoma County, as it stands as a testament to the region’s commitment to producing exceptional wines.
The sprawling estate, reminiscent of a French chateau, offers a sensory exploration of varietals that have garnered international acclaim. They have even been honored with the prestigious “Wine of the Year” award from Wine Spectator Magazine for their 1996 Cinq Cepages Cabernet Sauvignon.
From crisp Chardonnays to robust Cabernet Sauvignons, each sip tells a story of the terroir and craftsmanship. For an immersive experience, consider a private tour, where a knowledgeable guide unveils the secrets behind each bottle. And the best part is – you can enjoy this gourmet wine tasting all with a picturesque Sonoma Valley view.
After doing a wine tasting (hosted on their beautiful estate property), allocate some time in your schedule to explore their perfectly manicured garden and vineyard settings. This picturesque atmosphere makes for a truly memorable experience (in addition to being very “Insta-worthy”).
For a culinary escapade that transcends the ordinary, head to Layla Restaurant. This restaurant, nestled within the historic MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa, seamlessly combines farm-to-table freshness with Mediterranean-inspired flavors. The ambiance is as inviting as the menu, with a bright and airy restaurant that is surrounded by lush gardens.
The dining excursion begins with locally sourced ingredients, masterfully crafted into dishes that dance on the palate. From artisanal cheeses and traditional breakfast dishes to succulent seafood, every bite is a celebration of Sonoma’s diverse culinary landscape. As you dine in this picturesque setting, the heritage of the hotel adds a touch of nostalgia to your gastronomic adventure.
Another wonderful place to dine at, day or night, is Santé. This Michelin-rated restaurant (located within the Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa) is adorned with a Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning wine list and promises an unparalleled dining experience. The ambiance exudes understated sophistication, with an intimate setting that complements the culinary artistry.
Whether you come for Sunday brunch or stay for dinner, their delectable menu will have your tastebuds tantalized. From their hearty breakfast dishes including Farmers Market Omelet, Fresh Fruit, and Avocado Toast to their enticing dinner menu options including Seared Mt. Lassen Trout and Flannery Beef Hangar Steak, you’ll be delighted with their array of offerings.

Continue your gastronomic voyage with a visit to Wit & Wisdom (located at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort), the brainchild of renowned Bay Area restaurateur Michael Mina. This place is a hotspot for dinner, especially on bustling weekends. As you step into the industrial-style restaurant, you’re greeted by a warm and vibrant ambiance. Boasting cozy contemporary décor and modern artwork that’s inspired by Jack London, you’ll feel like you’re transported to a world of culinary innovation that pays homage to the history and character of the land.
From delectable small bites to sumptuous entrées, each dish is a celebration of flavors that dance on your taste buds. Pair your meal with selections from the extensive wine list, and let the evening unfold in an atmosphere of refined indulgence. If you’re looking for an “it place” that even the most notable Sonoma Valley winemakers dine at, this is it. Not to mention – if you’re passionate about truffles, you’ll be excited to try their Truffleato, which is their original interpretation of a savory-meet-semi-sweet truffle gelato.
Other popular places to eat in Sonoma are El Dorado Kitchen and the girl & the fig, both of which are located in Sonoma’s town square and are hotspots for tourists and locals alike. During my trip, I spoke with a few frequent travelers who have been visiting Sonoma Valley for many years, and they rave about these notable eateries.
Activities To Enjoy in Sonoma Valley
While the allure of Sonoma Valley undoubtedly lies in its world-class vineyards and award-winning cuisine, the region offers a plethora of other things to do there as well. From hot air balloon rides to championship golf courses, there are several fun activities to enjoy in Sonoma Valley.

Next up, when visiting this area, you must explore the unique boutiques and charming stores in Sonoma Square. Here you’ll discover artisanal treasures and interesting finds, in addition to wine-tasting rooms, gourmet chocolatiers, and laid-back eateries.
For history buffs, a visit to the San Francisco Solano Mission and other historic landmarks within Sonoma Plaza provides insight into the rich tapestry of the region’s past, dating back to the 1800s. As you walk around these iconic landmarks, you’ll truly feel like you’re transported to a different world, when life was simpler and quieter.
As you can see, Sonoma Valley isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that transcends seasons.
