While most people correlate Spring with cleaning, refreshing and updating your home goes way beyond organizing and getting tidy. If you’re limited on your budget, but want to give your home a little face-lift, then your first stop should be at your local Dunn-Edwards store, the place for color and quality paint. In today’s home improvement guide, we show you how to easily update a closet without costing a fortune or taking a lot of time to do.
Changing the appearance of your home (whether it’s a major over-haul or a minor modification) is as easy as choosing a new paint color.

Since most home-owners tackle home improvement projects one-by-one, it stands to reason that some spaces (like storage closets) often get over-looked or put on hold. As an example, I’ve updated my bedroom decór over the years by adding an elegant textured wallpaper, crown molding, and decorative accents (like framed artwork). But, my storage closet has taken a backseat to any improvements, since it wasn’t a top priority.
When I was offered the opportunity to work with Dunn-Edwards on this project, I jumped at the chance to update and refresh my storage closet. Years ago, I thought it would be fun to paint my closet a baby pink color, which was girly and feminine. While it suited me at the time, my personal style and esthetic has since evolved. In addition, through years of use, the shelves have started looking worn, and the walls were looking a bit dingy.
Since the storage closet houses a lot of my work-related materials, it definitely wasn’t an inspiring place for me to go when I needed to work on an Inspirations & Celebrations‘ related project. Ironic, huh?!
In recent years, I’ve leaned more toward sophisticated, understated designs, including soft neutrals (for my walls) and dramatic contrasting accents (like a bold, deep red colored carpet). To make my storage closet better reflect my current style, and seamlessly coordinate with my bedroom, I was inspired by Dunn-Edwards’ Beyond Wild Imaginations trend report which showed how warm neutrals are on-trend in 2017.
When I met with the Dunn-Edwards PCA, Pam Specchali, at their San Jose location, she asked me about the look I was going for, and reviewed the photos I provided. I informed her that I was seeking a warm-colored neutral hue that would complement my existing wallpaper (which was a Champagne color with a rosy undertone).
After comparing several similar samples, we both agreed that the sophisticated color (aptly called Cashmere DEC758 from the Perfect Palette® collection) was the perfect choice for my space. In addition to the paint, she provided me with all the supplies I needed, as well as full-size swatches (for me to keep on file, for future reference).
What I especially love about the experience working with Dunn-Edwards is how knowledgeable their PCAs are. Not only were they able to guide me through the process and give me painting tips, they also helped my family trouble-shoot another painting problem we had with our garage door (as a result of the original builder using an oil-based paint).
As you can see, the new warm neutral hue lightens and brightens the space, instantly making it look refreshed and updated. In addition, it reflects light better, and acts as a blank canvas for my work projects and materials.
Since the existing wood shelves were beyond repair, I went to a local lumber store to get new wood shelves cut to size, and then proceeded to prime and paint them to match. What a world of difference!
As shown above, the end result is both beautiful and functional. Not only does this storage closet have an updated appearance, it’s also more polished and finished-looking.
With decorative storage boxes, modern magazine racks, and framed artwork hung on the wall, this storage closet is a chic place that is definitely inspiring to go into now. And, all it really took was a little elbow grease and a bucket of paint to get the job done. How’s that for a budget-friendly home improvement job?!
