DIY Thanksgiving Decor: How To Create a Holiday Floral Arrangement

With most people wondering how they are going to stay within their entertaining budget for Thanksgiving, a simple solution for elegant Thanksgiving decor (that adds instant visual impact to your tablescape) is a DIY holiday floral arrangement.

Since florists often charge over $100 for a large floral arrangement, by choosing to make your own floral centerpiece, you can easily save up to 70% (excluding the cost of a vase). In addition to saving money (which can go towards holiday gifts instead), learning how to create a holiday floral arrangement is a fun seasonal project you can look forward to doing with family and friends.

How To Create a Holiday Floral Arrangement

Step 1: When you head to a market to pick-up the flowers, keep in mind the following basic tips.

To coordinate with your other holiday decor, opt for hues that appear next to each other on a color wheel. In this arrangement, I’ve incorporated flowers with orange, red, and yellow tones.

At least one or two flowers should be bought as a “bunch” (multiple stems), with only a few individual flowers (for focal points). To create a full arrangement, make sure to get a couple bouquets of filler flowers with medium-sized blooms (like poms or roses) to add volume and color. In addition, lush greenery and foliage provide a natural backdrop for the flowers while adding depth and visual contrast. Last but certainly not least, choose at least one type of focal flower (such as cheery sunflowers or radiant lilies) that features large prominent blooms.

Step 2: Before starting to arrange the flowers, decide on an appropriate vase. For a larger arrangement, opt for a tall vase with a wide neck. This will make it easier to place the flowers in, without cramping them. Fill the vase 3/4 of the way with filtered water. To help extend the life of your flowers, you can also mix in cut flower food while filling the vase with water. Set aside a pair of sharp scissors or pruning shears. When cutting the stems of the flowers, always cut them at an angle, as this enables the flowers to more easily absorb the water in the vase.

Step 3: After cutting the stems of your greenery, place the foliage in the vase. It’s ok if some of the greenery spills out of the sides of the vase, as this just creates the look of a fuller floral arrangement.

Step 4: Start adding the filler flowers (in this case, a mix of burgundy and orange colored poms were used). The filler flowers should not only add volume to the arrangement, they should also be used for height.

Step 5: Strategically cut the focal flowers so that they are different heights, then place them in the vase. This helps draw the eye from one focal flower to the next, highlighting each individual flower.

Step 6: To add extra holiday oomph to your floral arrangement, include a few sprigs of seasonal berries (such as Hypericum). These little additions instantly create a festive, Thanksgiving look.

Step 7: When placing your holiday floral arrangement on the dining table or entry table, you can either set the vase down directly on the surface of the table, or place any extra twigs and greenery (that you didn’t use for the arrangement) on the table, beneath the vase. This optional step adds a rustic, natural element to your tablescape or display.

As you can see, it’s relatively easy to create a beautiful DIY holiday floral arrangement that costs a fraction of the price, as compared to ordering a similar arrangement from a florist. Plus, it’s a fun and fuss-free project you can do by yourself or with your kids.

Cheers to a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season!
