Wine tasting and tours have become a quintessential activity when visiting Sonoma Valley and the surrounding area, offering travelers and wine enthusiasts the perfect opportunity to explore the region’s rich winemaking heritage while savoring some of the finest wines crafted from the area’s unique terroir.
However, as a wine enthusiast who has spent a considerable amount of time visiting multiple top-ranked wineries throughout California wine country, I can tell you one thing – not all wine tours and tastings are the same, so it’s advisable to do your research before booking a reservation. If you’re lucky, some wineries will walk you through their enchanting chateau or charming farmhouse while explaining how their wines are produced, while others take you on an excursion into their otherworldly underground caves.
If you’re seeking a unique and memorable winery tour and tasting that will leave you thirsting for more, you’re in for a treat. I recently discovered a hidden gem, tucked away in the rolling hillsides of Sonoma Valley —a family-owned winery off the beaten path that’s well worth the journey, offering one of the most immersive experiences you could hope for.
Benziger Family Winery ranked as one of America’s “10 Best Winery Tours”
When it comes to exceptional winery tours and tastings that infuse education, empowerment, and a taste of excellence – it’s no surprise that Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen, California was recently ranked as “one of the 10 best winery tours in the United States” by USA Today 10Best, in addition to receiving the 2024 Sonoma Valley People’s Choice award (by The Sonoma Index-Tribune) as the “Best Winery Tour”.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Sonoma Mountain, the 85-acre certified biodynamic farm at Benziger Family Winery offers a calming yet vibrant setting for exploration.
The rustic charm of the farmhouse and ranch-style wooden buildings nestled among lush trees evokes a sense of nostalgia infused with a cozy, inviting, home-on-the-range atmosphere. Surrounding the property, meticulously cared-for gardens, native plants, and peaceful ponds reflect the winery’s deep commitment to biodynamic farming while creating a tranquil ambiance. Verdant vineyards stretch across the rolling hills, thriving in the balance of nature, creating an atmosphere where beauty, bounty, and serenity come together organically.
What makes Benziger truly unique is its deep-rooted philosophy: the belief that extraordinary wines emerge from a rich connection to the land and the people. This family-owned and operated winery is not only a place where premium wines are crafted, but also a celebration of sustainable farming and nature’s vibrant energy. More than 40 years ago, Mike and Mary Benziger embarked on a journey to create something truly exceptional in Sonoma Valley, and decades later it continues to thrive as one of the top wineries in the region.
From the start, their vision was fueled by innovation and a desire to push boundaries in the pursuit of remarkable wine. In 1995, they took a bold step by transitioning their vineyards to biodynamic farming, a forward-thinking approach that set them apart in the industry. As one of the first wineries in Northern California to earn Biodynamic certification decades ago, Benziger has become a trailblazer in sustainable wine production, leading the way for others to follow.
Chris Benziger (VP, Brand Ambassador) exclaims, “One of the best features of farming biodynamically, is to watch visitors on our tour when they actually make the connection to what we are trying to do. It is almost as if you can see a light bulb go off, that “aha!” moment. They now understand the power of biodynamic farming and how it increases the quality of the wines – instead of pushing nature out, we work hand in hand with nature to create lively wines that are as vibrant as the land they’re from.”
When you visit the secluded winery and embark on their popular 90-minute Tribute Estate Tour & Tasting, you’ll see firsthand how this rare, holistic farming approach breathes life into every aspect of the land.
During the engaging and exciting tour, you’ll enjoy a ride around the gorgeous vineyards, taking in the sweeping vistas and learning about the rich ecosystem that thrives on the property, featuring farm animals (such as grazing sheep and cows that are hard-working experts at naturally weeding and fertilizing the land), blooming gardens, and flourishing vines that work together in harmony.
Throughout the tour, you’ll stop at various points to get a behind-the-scenes look at the extensive grape sorting and production process, take a walk through the impressive wine cave, and get a chance to taste freshly picked succulent wine grapes and ripe orchard fruits.
In addition to exploring their beautiful property, you’ll be treated to a delightful wine and cheese tasting in a private room at the end of the tour. The intimate seated tasting includes a variety of their best wines including the “Best in Class” 2023 Paradiso de Maria Sauvignon Blanc, the Gold Medal-winning 2021 de Coelo Quintus Pinot Noir, the 2021 Malbec, the 2021 Obsidian Point Cabernet, and the 2019 Tribute. Ranging from $43-$100 per bottle, their portfolio of elegant and sumptuous estate wines is not only incredibly well-made but is highly exclusive and coveted, as they’re only sold on-site at the winery or via their wine club.
Our knowledgeable tour guide – Wine Specialist, Dave Chapman, says, “In the world of wine, biodynamics is an intensive process that often requires more time and care to take on. As much as we’d like to believe humans are in control, with biodynamics that simply isn’t the case. Benziger has learned to work hand in hand with nature. When visitors come to the property, they are immersed in biodynamics. And see how the whole ecosystem is codependent. Nature is immensely powerful and when we work together, the planet, the people, and the wine are all better as a result.”
If you’re seeking a truly unforgettable wine-tasting experience when visiting the beautiful Sonoma Valley, Benziger Family Winery offers more than just great wine. It offers a journey through a remarkable sustainable farming process, where you’ll be inspired and empowered to appreciate the connection between the land, nature, and the extraordinary wines that come from it.
