Golden Goddess: Tips For Getting The Perfect Tan

With the weather starting to heat up, it’s time to get prepared for the warm, sunny days ahead. Since you’ll most likely be sporting a pair of shorts, a skirt, and a tank top this Summer, you’re probably thinking about getting a perfect tan to make you look and feel confident while wearing more revealing clothing. In decades past, women would lay out for hours, essentially baking in the sun, with the hopes of achieving the perfect tan. Nowadays, we know how dangerous sun exposure is, as it can cause sunburns and even lead to skin cancer. With that said, getting the perfect tan means relying on a combination of faux tan formulas to give us that golden goddess glow (without damaging our skin). Featured here are tips on how to easily and quickly get the perfect tan that looks natural and makes you feel fabulous.

Tips For Getting The Perfect Tan

1. Exfoliate Skin

To get the perfect tan, you need to start with smooth skin. The reason faux tans (done at home) generally look uneven and blotchy is because of dry, flaky patches of skin (which absorb the faux tan solution more readily). To prevent this from happening, always exfoliate your skin (using a granular body scrub, dry body brush, or AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser). Make sure to thoroughly dry your skin and apply a small amount of lotion to areas such as your knees and elbows, prior to applying faux tanner. This will help prevent the tanning solution from saturating those areas.

2. Apply Faux Tanner

Otherwise known as a sunless body tanner, there are a range of faux tanner products on the market nowadays that are easy to use, don’t cause streaking, and don’t leave you with an unnatural, orange-hued skin color. From misting sprays to bronzing mousses, faux tanners are the fastest and easiest way to give your skin a golden glow without worrying about getting a sunburn, spending time in a tanning booth, or damaging your skin.

When choosing a suitable faux tanner, it’s best to start with a formula that provides a light to medium glow. This way you can easily build-up color without drastically changing the look of your skin tone (with just one application).

Depending on your experience using faux tanners, if you are a novice, it’s advisable to use a misting spray (since these enable you to easily get complete coverage, even in hard-to-reach areas on your body, like the backs of your knees). Another alternative is a bronzing mousse, that is applied with an applicator mitt. These solutions generally have a light bronzer built-in, so that you can see where you have applied the tan solution to your skin (which helps you create an even, all-over application).

If you are an experienced self-tanner, then  sunless tanning cream and gel solutions are probably your favorite way to get the perfect tan. These formulas develop over the course of several hours, leaving you with a golden glow that lasts for up to 7 days.

3. Moisturize Skin

After your sunless tan has developed, make sure to moisturize your skin. Skin lotion not only helps to lock-in the color of the sunless tanner, it will also give your skin a luminous, healthy glow. To help maintain the tan over the next several days, continue to properly moisturize your skin (with essential oils and/or body creams).

Even though your skin will have a tan appearance, you will want to continue to wear sunscreen on a daily basis, to help protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. And to help your face match the tan on your body, simply sweep bronzer onto your cheekbones, along your hairline, and lightly on your nose.

As you can see, in just 3 easy steps, you can master the art of getting the perfect tan.
