Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is an important month for many women around the world; not because it marks the beginning of the holiday season, nor because it’s a time to play dress up (during Halloween). The reason why October is so significant is because it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

What is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

“The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services.

Since its inception more than 25 years ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. NBCAM recognizes that, although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. Today, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health.

Although October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, NBCAM is dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer throughout the year. We encourage you to regularly visit these sites to learn more about breast cancer, breast health, and the latest research developments.”  [Source: NBCAM]

Celebrities Promoting Breast Cancer Awareness

E! News & Fashion Police host, Giuliana Rancic, has become a major advocate for breast cancer awareness and early detection. Having survived the disease, Giuliana Rancic continues to share her inspiring story with millions of women (via her nationally-televised reality show, Giuliana & Bill). Giuliana has been quoted saying, “a lot of us think we’re invincible… but we have to start putting ourselves on the to-do list. I want to encourage everyone to be proactive with their health and get checked out.”

Legendary fashion Designer, Betsey Johnson, has also fought breast cancer. “With over 3 million women battling breast cancer today, everywhere you turn there is a mother, daughter, sister, or friend who has been affected by breast cancer.” Betsey Johnson has been demonstrative in promoting breast cancer awareness by sharing her story, getting involved with fundraising events, and raising money for cancer-related charities via the sales of her line.

Real Women Affected By Breast Cancer

Since 1 in 8 women become affected with breast cancer at some point in their lives, this month is a critical reminder to women everywhere that they need to be proactive in protecting their health through early detection.

This life-threatening disease knows no boundaries – women of all ages, races, and nationalities can become affected. That’s why it’s vitally important that you (and all the women you know) become educated about breast cancer, and get checked regularly.

In addition, you can help support the cause this month by buying products from companies that donate proceeds to causes devoted to breast cancer awareness, education, and research.
